The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most famous safari destination — and one of the best in Africa. The question is how many days to give it, and the honest answer depends on what you want.

A day-by-day view

  • 2 days / 1 night — the minimum. A taste of the Mara, but rushed, with long transfers eating into game time.
  • 3 days / 2 nights — the sweet spot for most travellers. Enough for several full game drives and a good chance at the big cats.
  • 4–5 days — ideal during the migration or for photographers, allowing you to follow the herds and revisit sightings.
If you only take one number from us: three days in the Mara is the difference between ticking it off and actually seeing it.

When the migration is in town

During the July–October river-crossing season, give the Mara more time — crossings are unpredictable and a single extra day dramatically improves your odds of witnessing one. Fly in rather than drive to maximise time on the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Are 2 days in the Masai Mara enough?

It's possible, but rushed. You'll spend significant time on road or air transfers, leaving limited time for actual game drives.
