The safari-or-beach question is one of the most common we hear from travellers planning their first trip to East Africa. The good news is that the geography of the region means you almost never have to choose. A wildlife safari followed by a beach extension is the most popular format we design — and the one our own team books for their own holidays.

The case for safari first

An East African safari is not a relaxing holiday in the conventional sense — it is intensely engaging. Early starts, long drives, constant observation, changing landscapes. It is stimulating and often emotionally overwhelming in the best way. Most travellers find, by the last day of a safari, that they are ready for something quieter.

Why the beach at the end works so well

After seven or ten days of dawn drives and predator sightings, landing on a beach in Zanzibar, Diani or the Kenyan coast feels like exhaling. The contrast is the point. And because both destinations are in the same region, the transfer between them is a short flight rather than an intercontinental journey.

The best beach extensions from each country

  • After Kenya: Diani Beach on the south coast (45-minute flight from Nairobi) or Watamu on the north coast. Both offer Indian Ocean reefs, white sand and fresh seafood.
  • After Tanzania: Zanzibar is the classic extension — a short flight from the Serengeti, with Stone Town's Swahili history and the north coast's clear water.
  • After Rwanda: Kigali connects easily to Zanzibar and to Diani Beach via Nairobi.
  • After Uganda: Zanzibar via Entebbe and Dar es Salaam is a straightforward route for a 3–4 night extension.
The safari-beach combination is the most popular format we sell — and the format our team books for their own family trips.

How long do you need for each?

For a complete trip, we typically recommend 6–10 days on safari followed by 3–5 days on the beach. A shorter safari of 3–5 days works if time or budget is limited, but aim for at least 3 nights on the beach — anything less and you barely arrive before leaving.

When safari alone is the right answer

Some travellers come specifically for wildlife and have no interest in beach time. Others want to cover two safari countries in the same trip. A 10-day pure-safari circuit covering Kenya and Tanzania or Uganda and Rwanda is a complete and deeply satisfying trip in its own right.
